Part of the Agasthyakoodam Biological Park, visitors are permitted to enter 1.5 km past the check point where a watch tower is situated. From here, one can view spectacular sights such as Thottumpara, Kathirumundi, Agasthyakoodam and Ponmudi Hills along with Pandipathu Peaks. Elephants also inhabit these forests and it is common to catch sight of them on the trail leading up to the watch tower as they have grown used to human presence.
Several tribal villages are found within these woods too. Getting permission from the Forest Department is required if you wish to visit Mankode, Chonanpara or Anchu Nazhikathodu further afield – which increases your chances of encountering elephant herds – all leading up to Peppara Dam Project area.
Wild boar, sambar, jungle fowl, Nilgirilangur, giant squirrel, bear, grey hornbill, bison, and a vivid range of butterflies can be spotted here. The area is also home to a wide variety of medicinal plants.
Important Things to Remember
Visitors arriving at 8 AM will get to watch the elephants being given a bath.
If you reach around 10 AM, you get to watch the elephants being fed by their handlers.
Rehabilitation Centre at Kappukad
Elephant lovers can visit the nearby Rehabilitation Centre at Kappukad. Here you can see aged elephants and young ones alike, dwelling in peace in a safe haven designed especially for them.
Another attractions are the bamboo rafting and a 3-km trekking to Kizhakkumalappara. The deer rehabilitation centre and the crocodile park under the Neyyar wildlife sanctuary are situated near to the centre.
