Kanakakunnu Palace in Kerala

Kanakakunnu Palace in Thiruvananthapuram stands as a distinguished example of Kerala Gothic architecture with strong Victorian-era influences. Nestled amidst a verdant park in the heart of the city, this red-brick structure is not only a visual landmark but also a vibrant cultural hub. Its beautifully landscaped surroundings, featuring an exceptional variety of trees and plants, further enhance its appeal as one of the city’s most cherished destinations.

Believed to have been constructed during the reign of Sree Moolam Thirunal Maharaja of Travancore, the palace initially served as a royal guest house. It was specifically designated for hosting dignitaries and offering non vegetarian cuisine, which was not permitted within the main royal residences due to the family's vegetarian customs. Inside, the palace is adorned with majestic crystal chandeliers and refined period furniture that reflect its regal past.

Today, Kanakakunnu Palace plays a central role in the cultural life of Thiruvananthapuram. It regularly hosts exhibitions, festivals, and performing arts events. The premises also house two significant auditoriums Nishagandhi, a popular open-air theatre, and Sooryakanthi both serving as premier venues for national and international cultural programs.
