Asan Memorial, situated in Thonnakkal near Thiruvananthapuram, is a serene heritage site dedicated to the revered Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan, preserving his literary legacy, personal artifacts, and the tranquil environment that once inspired his timeless works.
The Kumaran Asan National Institute of Culture, situated in the poet’s native village of Kayikkara in coastal Kerala, is the first memorial established by the Kerala government in honor of a poet. Dedicated to the legendary Malayalam poet and social reformer Kumaran Asan, this institution reflects the grace and depth of his literary works. Every corner of the memorial resonates with the elegance and meaning found in his poetry, offering visitors a glimpse into the life and legacy of one of Kerala’s most celebrated literary figures.
Kumaran Asan, regarded as one of the triumvirate poets of Malayalam literature, played a pivotal role in modernizing Malayalam poetry during the early 20th century. The memorial is built at his birthplace and attracts literature enthusiasts, cultural scholars, and tourists from across the globe. Spread across three acres of serene greenery, the campus is adorned with rare medicinal plants and artistic installations, all curated and maintained by renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman.
The memorial features four sculptures and the iconic ‘Freedom Gate’, also created by Kanayi. It houses a fully-equipped conference hall that hosts literary and cultural events throughout the year, with Asan Jayanti celebrations in April being the main highlight.
